Iron and Silk (Paperback)
by Mark SalzmanIn 1982, Salzman
flew off to teach English in Changsha, China. He writes of bureaucrats,
students and Cultural Revolution survivors, stripping none of their
complexity and humanity. He's gentle with their idiocies, saving his
sharpest barbs for himself (it's his pants that split from zipper to waist
whilst demonstrating martial arts in Canton). Though dribs of history and
drabs of classical lore seep through, this is mostly a personal tale, noted
by the Los Angeles Times for "the charmingly unpretentious manner in which
it penetrates a China inaccessible to other foreigners."

The Road Less Traveled and Beyond: Spiritual Growth in an
Age of Anxiety (Paperback)
by M. Scott PeckThe potential danger
in this book's title is the assumption that Peck is rehashing the same
material he wrote in The Road Less Traveled. Thankfully, this isn't so.
Although he touches upon the same themes that appear in most everything he
writes--narcissism vs. self-love and good vs. evil--Peck is clearly speaking
to the crucial dilemmas of the 1990s, such as overly simplistic thinking,
institutionalized racism and sexism, as well as the media's despairing
vision. Now that Peck has reached the maturity of 60, his narrative is less
know-it-all than in the days of yore. Yet, ironically, his decades of
research, writing, and human service give him more authority than ever.

The Art of War (Paperback)
by Sun Tzu (Author), B. H. Liddell Hart (Foreword), Samuel B.
Griffith (Translator)The Art of War
is the Swiss army knife of military theory--pop out a different tool for any
situation. Folded into this small package are compact views on
resourcefulness, momentum, cunning, the profit motive, flexibility,
integrity, secrecy, speed, positioning, surprise, deception, manipulation,
responsibility, and practicality. Thomas Cleary's translation keeps the
package tight, with crisp language and short sections. Commentaries from the
Chinese tradition trail Sun-tzu's words, elaborating and picking up on
puzzling lines. Take the solitary passage: "Do not eat food for their
soldiers." Elsewhere, Sun-tzu has told us to plunder the enemy's stores, but
now we're not supposed to eat the food? The Tang dynasty commentator Du Mu
solves the puzzle nicely, "If the enemy suddenly abandons their food
supplies, they should be tested first before eating, lest they be poisoned."
Most passages, however, are the pinnacle of succinct clarity: "Lure them in
with the prospect of gain, take them by confusion" or "Invincibility is in
oneself, vulnerability is in the opponent." Sun-tzu's maxims are widely
applicable beyond the military because they speak directly to the exigencies
of survival. Your new tools will serve you well, but don't flaunt them.
Remember Sun-tzu's advice: "Though effective, appear to be ineffective."

1-2-3 Magic: Effective Discipline for Children
2-12 (123 Magic) (Paperback)
by Thomas W. Phelan (Author)Previously available as a booklet in
conjunction with a workshop and as a video, clinical psychologist Phelan's
simple, effective child-management program has now been issued as a trade
paperback. The gist of the plan is to enable parents to discipline children,
ages 2 to 12, by instituting a system of counting and time-outs, delivered
straightforwardly and unemotionally. How the regimen is used to stop
undesirable behavior, stimulate desirable conduct, and cope with children's
testing is conveyed in Phelan's candid style, filled with common sense,
concrete examples, and lots of reassuring humor. Time-and parent-tested, the
methods are applied in identifiable situations (pouting, bedtime, dressing)
as well in the all-too familiar incidences of children testing and
manipulating their elders. Best of all, the method enables parents to
control their kids without yelling . . . or worse. In addition, Phelan
covers homework, active listening, self-esteem, behavior in public, and the
use of his method in schools. An excellent, workable, and supportive
resource for parents and educators.

Rich Dad, Poor Dad: What the Rich Teach Their
Kids About Money--That the Poor and Middle Class Do Not! (Paperback)
by Robert T. Kiyosaki (Author)Personal-finance author and lecturer Robert
Kiyosaki developed his unique economic perspective through exposure to a
pair of disparate influences: his own highly educated but fiscally unstable
father, and the multimillionaire eighth-grade dropout father of his closest
friend. The lifelong monetary problems experienced by his "poor dad" (whose
weekly paychecks, while respectable, were never quite sufficient to meet
family needs) pounded home the counterpoint communicated by his "rich dad"
(that "the poor and the middle class work for money," but "the rich have
money work for them"). Taking that message to heart, Kiyosaki was able to
retire at 47. Rich Dad, Poor Dad, written with consultant and CPA
Sharon L. Lechter, lays out his the philosophy behind his relationship with
money. Although Kiyosaki can take a frustratingly long time to make his
points, his book nonetheless compellingly advocates for the type of
"financial literacy" that's never taught in schools. Based on the principle
that income-generating assets always provide healthier bottom-line results
than even the best of traditional jobs, it explains how those assets might
be acquired so that the jobs can eventually be shed.

Rich Dad's Retire Young, Retire Rich
(Paperback)
by Robert T. Kiyosaki (Author)In this fifth addition to his highly
successful "Rich Dad" series, Kiyosaki (Rich Dad Poor Dad) now focuses on
the power of debt leveraging in order to work less and earn more. Beginning
with the principle of changing attitudes about financial freedom, he
explains the difference between earned income and passive or investment
income, managing good debt that makes money for you, such as in real estate,
the fundamental concern about 401(k) retirement plans that are too focused
on stock market performance, and the need to create a long-term financial
freedom plan and the emotional discipline to stick to it. Listeners will
likely be captivated as they learn how to replicate his success, and the
crisp narration by Jim Ward definitely makes this fact-filled collection of
sound financial advice another hit for Kiyosaki. The solid, practical
insight into how to put together a plan to financial freedom will require a
commitment to changing lifestyles and personal attitudes about work and, of
course, enough time left in life to allow the investments to succeed. Highly
recommended for all public libraries, especially those that have not yet
begun to add Kiyosaki's other super titles to their business and investment
collections. Dale Farris, Groves, TX

Rich Dad's Guide to Investing: What the Rich
Invest in, That the Poor and the Middle Class Do Not! (Paperback)
by Robert T. Kiyosaki (Author)The rich are different from the rest of us,
if for no other reason than U.S. tax and securities laws allow them to
invest in ways that keep us from catching up to them. That's why 90 percent
of all corporate shares of stock are owned by 10 percent of the people.
Kiyosaki believes it's possible for anyone to move up into that 10 percent,
but it takes a different view of investing than most people have: it takes a
plan to be a successful investor. And a plan is more than simply buying and
selling, or collecting "assets" that bring in no cash and are thus more akin
to liabilities. The way most people invest, "they might as well be pushing a
wheelbarrow in a circle," he writes. A plan is "mechanical, automatic, and
boring," a formula for success that has worked historically for most of
those who've used it. Kiyosaki's "rich dad" (actually, the father of his
best friend) tells him the simplest analogy is the game Monopoly: buy four
green houses, trade them for one red hotel, and repeat until you become
rich.

Handguns and Freedom: ...their care and
maintenance (Paperback)
by Joe Pierre (Author)Of what good are the freedoms spelled out in the
Bill of Rights if the people lack the power to enforce them? As Thomas
Hobbes Noted in 1651, in his book, Leviathan, "Covenants without the Sword
are but Words, and of no strength to secure a man at all."
The attempts by 'liberal' forces in this country in the last few decades to
deprive the American people of their private firearms, and thus to deny them
their constitutionally guaranteed right to own and carry private means of
self-defense is an old and infamous pattern of conduct, dating back
centuries-a common practice of tyrants.
If the people do not resist this effort we are in dire danger of losing not
only our other freedoms, which are enumerated in the Bill of Rights, but
also the blessings of liberty, which the Preamble proclaimed was one of the
main goals of the government established by that document.

Way of the Peaceful Warrior: A Book That
Changes Lives (Paperback)
by Dan Millman (Author)During his junior year at the University of
California, Dan Millman first stumbled upon his mentor (nicknamed Socrates)
at an all-night gas station. At the time, Millman hoped to become a
world-champion gymnast. "To survive the lessons ahead, you're going to need
far more energy than ever before," Socrates warned him that night. "You must
cleanse your body of tension, free your mind of stagnant knowledge, and open
your heart to the energy of true emotion." From there, the unpredictable
Socrates proceeded to teach Millman the "way of the peaceful warrior." At
first Socrates shattered every preconceived notion that Millman had about
academics, athletics, and achievement. But eventually Millman stopped
resisting the lessons, and began to try on a whole new ideology--one that
valued being conscious over being smart, and strength in spirit over
strength in body. Although the character of the cigarette-smoking Socrates
seems like a fictional, modern-day Merlin, Millman asserts that he is based
on an actual person. Certain male readers especially appreciate the
coming-of-age theme, the haunting love story with the elusive woman Joy, and
the challenging of Western beliefs about masculine power and success.

Crossroads: The Life and Music of Eric
Clapton: The Life and Music of Eric Clapton (Paperback)
by Michael Schumacher (Author)Guitar hero, junkie, Beatle-wife-stealer,
aggrieved father, born-again bluesman--Eric Clapton's career has had enough
twists and turns for several rock stars. Schumacher examines Clapton's
travails and chronicles their effects. Like many of his peers, Clapton
expresses personal ups and downs in his music. For instance, Patti Harrison
was the inspiration for the shimmering hit, "Layla" ; Schumacher examines
that connection as well as the relationship with fellow guitar hero Duane
Allman that made the recording possible. Schumacher also recounts Clapton's
interactions with Howlin' Wolf, Delaney Bramlett, and the 1960s psychedelic
scene. He makes the point that Clapton followed rather than set fashions:
Jimi Hendrix and Bob Dylan inspired his frizzy sixties hairdo; the Beatles
inspired the psychedelic art with which his supergroup Cream surrounded
itself; and Dylan and the Band inspired the laid-back sound he adopted after
Cream broke up. Eventually, Schumacher brings us up to date: Clapton, once
hailed as God by London subway graffiti, has come a long way. This is a
necessary addition to the pop-music library.

B. King (Paperback)
by B. B. King (Author)His real name is Riley B. King, but the B.B.
stands, as any aficionado knows, for Blues Boy, a nickname he was given in
the late 1940s when he was a disk jockey in Memphis, Tenn. Of course, he's
best known as the King of the Blues to millions of fans throughout the
world. At 70, B.B. King is still singing the blues and this is his story,
from his childhood growing up in the Mississippi Delta, to the purchase of
his first guitar at age 12, from his first real break after his appearance
on Sonny Boy Williamson's King Biscuit Time radio show, to his ascent to
international acclaim as America's ambassador of the blues.

How to Win Friends & Influence
People (Paperback)
by Dale Carnegie (Author)This grandfather of all people-skills
books was first published in 1937. It was an overnight hit, eventually
selling 15 million copies. How to Win Friends and Influence People is
just as useful today as it was when it was first published, because Dale
Carnegie had an understanding of human nature that will never be outdated.
Financial success, Carnegie believed, is due 15 percent to professional
knowledge and 85 percent to "the ability to express ideas, to assume
leadership, and to arouse enthusiasm among people." He teaches these skills
through underlying principles of dealing with people so that they feel
important and appreciated. He also emphasizes fundamental techniques for
handling people without making them feel manipulated. Carnegie says you can
make someone want to do what you want them to by seeing the situation from
the other person's point of view and "arousing in the other person an eager
want." You learn how to make people like you, win people over to your way of
thinking, and change people without causing offense or arousing resentment.
For instance, "let the other person feel that the idea is his or hers," and
"talk about your own mistakes before criticizing the other person." Carnegie
illustrates his points with anecdotes of historical figures, leaders of the
business world, and everyday folks.

The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People
(Paperback)
by Stephen R. Covey (Author)The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People:
Powerful Lessons in Personal Change was a groundbreaker when it was
first published in 1990, and it continues to be a business bestseller with
more than 10 million copies sold. Stephen Covey, an internationally
respected leadership authority, realizes that true success encompasses a
balance of personal and professional effectiveness, so this book is a manual
for performing better in both arenas. His anecdotes are as frequently from
family situations as from business challenges.
Before you can adopt the seven habits, you'll need to accomplish what
Covey calls a "paradigm shift"--a change in perception and interpretation of
how the world works. Covey takes you through this change, which affects how
you perceive and act regarding productivity, time management, positive
thinking, developing your "proactive muscles" (acting with initiative rather
than reacting), and much more.
This isn't a quick-tips-start-tomorrow kind of book. The concepts are
sometimes intricate, and you'll want to study this book, not skim it. When
you finish, you'll probably have Post-it notes or hand-written annotations
in every chapter, and you'll feel like you've taken a powerful seminar by
Covey.

Dealing with People You Can't Stand: How to
Bring Out the Best in People at Their Worst (Paperback)
by Dr. Rick Brinkman (Author)Whether at work or at home, we all have to
deal with people we can't stand to be around. Our challenge is to develop
creative ways to handle these difficult people. Brinkman and Kirschner, both
doctors of naturopathic medicine and professional speakers, have just made
our job easier with this lively guidebook, in which they identify and
explore the psychological roots of ten specific behavior patterns that
represent normal people at their worst. Realizing that changing oneself is
more realistic than changing the behavior of others, the authors provide a
variety of communicative skills that we can cultivate in ourselves to turn
conflict into cooperation. Finally, Brinkman and Kirschner (How To Handle
Difficult People with Tact and Skill, McGraw, 1994) illustrate how to use
these skills with each of the ten problem behaviors. While all problem
behaviors might not fit nicely into one of their ten categories, the authors
do provide a dynamic assortment of interpersonal communication tools for
managing most difficult people. Highly recommended for all libraries.

How to Get What You Want and
Want What You Have: A Practical and Spiritual Guide to Personal Success
(Paperback)
by John GrayWhat you want materially and what you want spiritually
are both important, says John Gray, Ph.D., in How to Get What You Want
and Want What You Have. "Wanting more is the nature of our soul, mind,
heart, and senses," he says. As an antidote of sorts to the sometimes overly
strict books of late that advocate a life of utter simplicity, he concedes
that it's okay to want a big promotion or fancy car. It's also noble to want
a solid spiritual life and to want to be at peace with yourself. However, he
says, you need to recognize and work on the many self-defeating behaviors
that may be thwarting your chances for reaching your goals. In fact, he
identifies 24 typical stumbling blocks to look for.

The Different Drum: Community Making and Peace
(Paperback)
by M. Scott Peck (Author)An advocate of a supranational government agency
to replace obsolete nation-states and transformation of the military into a
national service corps, psychiatrist Peck, author of The Road Less Traveled,
etc., argues that physical and spiritual salvation no longer can be
separated. The only way to combat the public apathy and "militant ignorance"
that allow the arms race to continue lies in grass-roots propagation of the
community ideal, which the church and government have lost, argues the
author. Individualism plus groupand self-acceptance, good communication and
joint commitment are essential to building a true community whatever its
membership and interests. Peck foresees a new era of integration favorable
to a community movement that calls for universal application of the personal
principles of tolerance and love. Renouncing both policies of appeasement
and deterrence, he proposes a "peace through weakness" strategy that dares
us to "empty" ourselves of outmoded ideas of security to the extent of
facing the economic consequences of eliminating the arms race. Major

Virus of the Mind:: The New
Science of the Meme (Paperback)
by Richard Brodie (Author)If you've ever wondered how and why
people become robotically enslaved by advertising, religion, sexual fantasy,
and cults, wonder no more. It's all because of "mind viruses," or "memes,"
and those who understand how to plant them into other's minds. This is the
first truly accessible book about memes and how they make the world go
'round.
Of course, like all good memes, the ideas in Brodie's book are
double-edged swords. They can vaccinate against the effects of cognitive
viruses, but could also be used by those seeking power to gain it even more
effectively. If you don't want to be left behind in the coevolutionary arms
race between infection and protection, read about memes

Our Psychic Potentials
(Paperback)
by D. Scott Rogo (Author)Parapsychologists have uncovered
irrefutable evidence that psychic abilities – including telepathy,
precognition, and psycho kinesis – exist. But they are not "gifts" in any
sense of the word. They are potentials. And as potentials, they are
something we all inherently possess and can develop. The only problem is:
how can we tap and use these abilities reliably?
In Our Psychic Potentials, D. Scott Rogo presents some very specific
strategies – some known about for hundreds of years, others recently
discovered – for accessing our psychic potentials. These psychic development
techniques involve dreaming, mental imagery, relaxation, suggestion, and
feedback. Called "open minded," "frank," and "refreshing" by readers, this
step-by-step guide to self-testing and psychic training also examines the
scientific evidence that our psychic abilities can indeed be developed and
used on demand.

You Can Heal Your Life (Gift
Edition) (Turtleback)
by Louise Hay (Author)If you haven't seen Hay House's Lifestyles
series of gorgeous gift books, there is no better way to acquaint yourself
than with publisher/author Louise Hay's You Can Heal Your Life. A
bestseller for many years, You Can Heal Your Life has been
republished with bright, beautiful illustrations in full, living color and
exquisite typography--each and every page is a work of art by artist Joan
Perrin Falquet. The timeless message of the book is that we are each
responsible for our own reality and "dis-ease." Hay believes we make
ourselves ill by having thoughts of self-hatred. She includes a directory of
ailments and emotional causes for each with a corresponding affirmation to
help overcome the illness. For example, the probable cause of multiple
sclerosis is "mental hardness, hard-heartedness, iron will, and
inflexibility." The healing "thought pattern" would be: "By choosing loving,
joyous thoughts, I created a loving joyous world. I am safe and free."

like ADHD, and emotional support. I've already given 2 as gifts...and it's
not heavy reading for those already "on overload" I think it's a little gem.

Mars and Venus on a Date: A Guide for
Navigating the 5 Stages of Dating to Create a Loving and Lasting
Relationship (Paperback)
by John Gray (Author)The latest tentacle of John Gray's formidable Mars
and Venus octopus deals with a topic near to the heart of almost
everybody--dating. With a lot of insight and common sense, Gray tackles the
hard and often messy business of finding "a soul mate." Without fear or
favor, Mars and Venus on a Date dissects the dynamics between men and
women and the five stages each relationship must pass through: attraction,
uncertainty, exclusivity, intimacy, and, finally, engagement (for marriage,
of course). Even though Mars and Venus on a Date isn't The Rules
by a long shot, the courtship it describes is surprisingly old-fashioned.
It's chock-full of things your mother might say: "Most people find or are
found by their soul mates when they are not really looking." "The man should
never talk more than the woman." But how to know if the person you're with
is your "soul mate?" Gray writes, "When our soul wants to marry our partner,
it feels like a promise that we came into this world to keep." Which
translates into, "When you know, you know."
